Susan Russell is the Editor-in-Chief and founder of Grendel Press, an independent publisher devoted to dark fantasy, horror, and dark romance. Guided by the belief that in the heart of every monster is a truth waiting to be told, she built Grendel Press to champion stories that explore otherness, moral ambiguity, and the depths of humanity reflected in the things we fear.
Under her leadership, Grendel Press has grown from a one-woman operation into a collaborative team with a rapidly expanding catalog of novels and anthologies. The press focuses on character-driven, psychologically rich fiction that favors depth, tension, and consequence over empty shock value. Every title is chosen with intention: to unsettle, to challenge, and to linger.
Why Grendel? Because monsters are rarely what they seem. Inspired by the outsider of Beowulf, the name reflects the press’s mission: step into the darkness, question who gets to define good and evil, and tell the stories from the other side.
