I work with authors, writers, and other editors to help them solve communication problems. Most of the time, that means editing. Sometimes, it means helping them market themselves or their books. Occasionally, it means something else entirely. Regardless, I’m always eager to do it.
I like solving problems. It’s a compulsion, really. I come across a problem and before I even know what’s going on, my brain is working on a solution. Even when I’m completely out of my depth, my mind is not deterred. It wants to come up with some kind of creative solution to the thing it knows nothing about. Don’t ever talk to me about your plumbing issues.
So it goes with editing. I don’t simply read a manuscript and point out the issues. I provide suggestions. I come up with solutions. Thankfully, writing and editing are things that I do know about.
I approach every project on its own terms and its own merits. There is no one-size-fits-all stencil for storytelling. My aim is to do everything I can to help authors improve upon their work and present to the world the absolute best version of their vision.
I use the Chicago Manual of Style as my guide for editing, but my true North Star is the author’s voice and style. I use my years of experience writing in the voices of an assortment of different brands to strike a balance between clarity and authenticity. The reader needs to be able to understand the words on the page, and the author needs to write them in a way that honors their vision, their identity, and their craft.
